Attendance

If a Student needs an early release pass, a Parent/legal guardian needs to call the Attendance Hotline the night before or by 7:30 am the morning of the early release, to have the pass ready in time. Calls for early release passes received after 7:30 am will be delayed.

 

It is the Student’s responsibility to pick up their pass at the Attendance Office before school, during passing period, at break or lunch. Passes will not be delivered to Students. Students may not leave class to pick up their pass. Students that have picked up their pass are expected to exit school at their assigned time to leave. Leaving campus without a pass will result in Truancy.

 

When leaving a message on the Hotline, the following information is required. Please speak clearly:

• You must provide the student’s ID number, Student's name (spell last name slowly and clearly), and grade
• Your Name
• Relationship to the student
• Time student is to be released
• Reason

There are two ways to report an absence:

1. Utilize the ParentVue app. This can be accessed through MyPlan on a web browser or iOS or Android app. You can review this quick tutorial.

2. Call the hotline at (858) 676-6311 each day the student is absent. All absences must be cleared within 48 hours or they will be coded as truant.

When leaving a message on the Hotline, the following information is required. Please speak clearly and slowly.

• Relationship to the student
• Time student is to be released
• Reason

Absences and Make-Up Work: Students with a verified excused absence will be able to make up work as per PUSD Board Policy within a reasonable amount of time and discussed with the teacher. Parents may NOT excuse absences or tardies from periods after the student arrives on campus.

Please plan accordingly for morning traffic, drop-off, and walking to class to arrive at the classroom on time. Frequent 1st period tardies may result in disciplinary consequences.

Students arriving less than 15 minutes late to school must go straight to class even if a parent has called to excuse the tardy. 

ALL students arriving later than15 minutes must stop at the Attendance Office to sign in with our kiosk prior to going to their classroom, whether a parent has excused the tardy or not.

To review your student's attendance, use the ParentVue app accessed through MyPlan or an iOS or Android app.

 

Students who become sick after arriving on campus must report to the Health Office.

If the student is in class, they must speak with their teacher to be released from class to go to the Health Office. From there, the Health Technician will assist the student and contact the parent. Students who leave through the Health Office will obtain their early release pass there, not the Attendance Office. The parent/guardian does not need to call the Attendance Office.

 

Students who are ill are not checked out through the Attendance Office.

To excuse a student’s tardy or absence because of a medical appointment, the State of California requires verification from a health care provider. Please ask for a medical note from your health care provider if your student has missed school for a medical appointment. Students may drop their medical notes off at the Attendance office window or parents can email the notes to [email protected].

If the student has an injury or medical excuse from participation in ENS, athletics, or has other long term medical excusals, please provide details to the Health Technician and they will communicate with the appropriate administrator, teacher and/or coach.

 

 

 

 

 

We have initiated a comprehensive attendance monitoring program at Del Norte to curtail chronic absences and to keep you informed of your student's presence in classes. Attendance is taken in each period. To ensure the best educational experience, attendance to class MUST be a priority. If a student has twelve full-day absences this will be considered excessive and a Student Attendance Review Team (SART) Appointment letter will be sent to the district office. Students who are excessively absent are sent an Attendance or Truancy Letter to inform both the student and parents of frequent absences throughout the year. Letters are generated and mailed regardless of the type of absences, whether the absences are excused, the student is ill, or medically excused. This may serve as a simple reminder or review of your student's absences.

 

It is important for students to be in class receiving direct instructions, meet with their teachers, learn from their peers, and collaborate. 

 

• Plan vacations only during holiday breaks
  • If an extended absence is unavoidable, see Ms. Wilson in the Attendance Office about an OCIS contract
• Create a routine and stick to it
• Schedule non-urgent medical or dental appointments after school or on the weekend as much as possible
• Work with your counselor to schedule your classes appropriately each trimester
• Keep your absences under 18 for the entire school year

 

 

When your student attains adult status at the age of 18, they are granted by law the right to sign all legal documents related to their education and to represent themselves in all educational matters. Under certain circumstances, the parent or guardian of an 18-year-old student may no longer receive notice of absences or other official communications from the school without the specific authorization of the student. California Education Code 46012 states: “For purposes of any procedure for verification of absences from school, a student 18 years of age or over, with respect to his absences from school, shall have all the responsibilities and powers which, in case of a minor, would be charged to the parent, guardian, or other person having charged or control of the minor.” Students receiving special education services are provided adult status in compliance with California Education Code 56041.5, which provides for notification to both the individual and the parent of the individual of procedural safeguards.  

 

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that applies to all educational agencies and institutions (e.g., schools) that receive funding under any program administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Once a student reaches 18 or attends a postsecondary institution, he or she becomes an “eligible student,” and all rights formerly given to parents under FERPA transfer to the student. However, FERPA provides ways in which a school may, but is not required to, share information from an eligible student's education records with parents, without the student's consent.

If you have moved, please inform us as soon as possible. This is important for any mail such as official report cards to be delivered accurately. Fill out the residency form and email it with (2) proofs of residency. Proofs of residency can include:
